Summer Training Tale

The summer of 2022 was a lifetime experience for me as I got my first industrial exposure as a computer science student by working with tech lead giants like Microsoft and emerging startups like Celebal Technology. The profile on which I got exposure there are relatively new in the industry which are DevOps and Cybersecurity.

Microsoft Cyber Security Engage was introduced first time in India and commenced from 17th of May. We got to learn about basics of cybersecurity, Computer forensics, Reverse Engineering, Firewalls, Cyber Defence, different Malwares and their analysis, learnt about common network vulnerablities and got hands on experience with project assignment on Wireshark, Session hijacking, ARP spoofing and Denial of service attack. We also learnt about the implementations of Python for cybersecurity with MITRE attack framework and using ML for managing insider risks.

At the end of the engage program we had to submit a research paper on “Preventing a Stuxnet like attack on Indian Soil” which completed the overall aspects of our learning and also had a final test to conclude the program. This program brings awareness to us about the risk and vulnerability faced by individuals as well as governments. The modern warfare with involvement of computer and cyber threats are no longer part of a movie or fictional, but a reality by looking at examples like attack on Indian National Power Grid, Attack on Nuclear facility of Iran and recent example of Ukraine where destructive malware called WhisperGate was circulated just before the attack.

The second part of my summer break started with Celebal Technologies where I chose the DevOps domain to work on. During my sixth semester at my University, I selected DevOps as my elective after getting to know about it from the course handout. This domain opened an all new dimension of computer science for me where we work on building, releasing and monitoring of the project.

We had multiple master or training sessions during the tenure of 2 months where we learned from the basics of practical requirements of industries where we worked on Microsoft Azure and learned all the detailed concepts of cloud computing with DevOps requirements like Docker, Kubernetes, DevOps portal which is somewhat like JIRA, Azure App services and NIC. Each of these topics are itself a subject with vast variety of applications for each industry. There were multiple personality programs which were also organized during the internship where we got to know how to stand out from the crowd in industry by taking the initiative. Charcha-ae-Celebal, a program which was tasked to each intern where he had to gather all students of 2023 batch and give them a presentation to boost the self confidence was also organized by me.
